BRIEF: For my A2 coursework I have chosen to produce a documentary extract with two ancillary texts of a newspaper advertisement and a double page spread from a television listing magazine. I have used this blog to record my progress throughout this project from research and planning to production and evaluation.

Final Double Page Spread

Evaluation: Question 1

Evaluation: Question 2

In conclusion the combination of my main product and ancillary texts is represented effectively as they signify a brand identity, particularly through BBC Three and its methods of branding. As a recognisable and established television channel it was crucial that I use and develop similar branding ideas. The representation of my three products all have similar aspects which work well together and create a symbolic and familiar identity.

Log: Unimproved Documentary Extract

This is my documentary extract without the final improvements that I was suggested to change by my target audience. The improvements I have made are in the post below.

Thursday 9 January 2014

Log: Improvements

-Sailing footage to be added
-Voiceover in the end (concluding points) "this year 10 students have offers from Oxbridge"
-Blip
-"I'm in Essex Girl" at the very beginning
-Youtube boxes "challenging stereotype" on evaluation 3

Production: Editing My Documentary

Today I added in some music to the ending of my extract to round it up and keep the audience entertained. As it is an extract I don't particularly need a distinct ending therefore, there isn't an end to it it just cuts off and left to be continued.

Production: Editing My Documentary

I added some sailing footage I found on Youtube to the documentary to demonstrate to the audience Charlotte's hobby in more detail as an insight to her life. This makes the documentary look more realistic and believable with footage from a sailing race in Burnham. I took this advice from my audience feedback.

As my documentary is specifically an extract there isn't a definite ending with credits etc. but I still needed some sort of finish as a message to the audience. Therefore, I faded the background music out and found a guidance video on Youtube of how to create freeze frames in iMovie on the last shot. This created an ending to the extract, I also changed the saturation to black and white on the freeze frame to give the finishing effect.

Production: Editing My Documentary

Today I have been editing parts of my documentary that needed improving. I looked at the comments made from audience feedback and I have started by moving around the interview with Catherine Sweeney to random places within the documentary so it isn't just put at the end with no relevence. Therefore, when she describes the Essex stereotype I have used that to begin the documentary after the title sequence along with a clip of text with the question on to clarify with the audience what the sociologist is talking about.

In my lesson later today I am hoping to get feedback on this change and I am also questionning whether to put some background music behind this clip so it doesn't sound completely silent enabling the audience to lose focus.

Production: BBC Three Logo

Today I realised I hadn't added the BBC Three logo to my documentary, this is a crucial aspect of any television programme. Therefore, I placed the logo in the top left hand corner of my production to establish 'Beyond the Essex Girl's' channel. However, the logo I added has somehow cut off a bit of the 't' in three so, I will have to see if I can find a similar logo that is clear to read.

Research: Audience Feedback for Poster

My feedback for my newspaper advert poster was very positive and there are some improvements that have been mentioned that I have to agree with, such as:
- "Could be a hashtag of the name of the programme as when the programme is on and the audience tweets using the hashtag, people that see the tweets may be inclined to watch the documentary knowing that it is on"
- "A slogan could be a quote within the documentary"

I will take this feedback into account to improve my product.

Research: Audience Feedback on Double Page Spread

This is my finished draft of my second auxiliary product but I would like to find out some audience feedback through google docs questionnaire in case there should be any further changes.

Log: How should it end?

As my product is a documentary extract it doesn't need a definite ending however, I am struggling on how to actually end it, whether there should be music and the clip should fade away, should it be an ad- break as it's a television programme. I am struggling a little and need some help with this so I have been researching previous blogs from the year above to get some ideas to what they did if they made a documentary extract like me.
